In recent years, the important prerequisites for long-term peace and development in Southeast Asia are undergoing unusual changes.The rise of China and the intensification of strategic competition between China and the United States, and the rampant COVID-19 foreshadow the many uncertainties in the balance of power and economic and political development in the region.

Southeast Asia is facing an extraordinary choice on how to seek rebalancing and defuse geopolitical risks in the game of China, the United States, Europe, Russia and Japan, and how to enhance the resilience of national economic development and political stability and maintain regional security under the disorder of global economic order and the continuous impact of the COVID-19. In view of this, the Institute of International Relations of Yunnan University and the School of International Relations of Jinan University jointly organized the Southeast Asia Studies 2021 Annual Paper Workshop on October 27, 2021, with the theme of "Southeast Asia: Choices in Extraordinary Times".
