Center for Afghanistan Studies and Institute of South Asian Studies Jointly Organized the "Afghanistan Studies " Online Exchange Event

On the afternoon of June 19, 2020,CenterforAfghanistanStudies ofLanzhou University andInstitute of South Asian Studiesof Sichuan University conducted an online internal exchange activity of "Afghanistan Studies". Teachers and students of the two institutions conducted discussions and exchanges on the current situation in Afghanistan. Zeng Xiangyu from theInstitute of South Asian Studiesof Sichuan University presided over the keynote speech session, and ProfessorZhu Yongbiao from theCenterforAfghanistanStudiesof Lanzhou University hosted the discussion and exchange session.

Dr. Zhang Weiwei from the School of Politics and International Relations of Lanzhou University and the CenterforAfghanistan Studiesgave a brief account of China's policy towards Afghanistan. He believes that the Afghan issue is a prolonged and complex problem. Afghanistan's national sovereignty status is still controversial, the political and economic system is weak. The fate of China and Afghanistan is connected, and the turbulence in Afghanistan poses a serious threat to China's western border issues. China has always adhered to the principle of Afghan’s own leadership, no interfering in the Afghan issue, and has devoted to promoting regional reconciliation.

Xiong Liedi fromthe Institute of South Asian Studies of Sichuan University reported in five parts with the theme of "The Trend of India's Policy Concerning Afghanistan after the US-Thailand Agreement". Firstly he introduced India’s main demands: 1. Prevent terrorist activities against India; 2. Help Afghanistan to be a friendly neighboring country; 3. Search for access to Central Asia through Afghanistan. Secondly, he analyzed India's aid model to Afghanistan. Then he introduced India's attitude towards the peace process in Afghanistan, and the objective conditions for India to contact the Taliban. Finally, he analyzed the way India participates in the peace process in Afghanistan.

During the last session, students had a lively discussion and exchange, and participants also answered the questions raised by the students in detail. The online communication activity ended successfully.
